Filmmakers Against Racism

Filmmakers Against Racism (FAR) was initiated in response to the 2008 xenophobic riots, using cinema to give voice to victims and foster public dialogue on racism and social solidarity. The project involved a collective of film production houses, directors, and producers who created films to share personal stories and to encourage understanding and action within the South African public and government. The project aimed to provide a platform for refugees and victims of xenophobia to share their experiences, increasing public awareness.

The films also sought to prompt the South African public to reflect on the causes of the violence and consider what actions could be taken. Filmmakers created documentaries to document events and perspectives. The films were then presented to the South African public, aiming to foster compassion and solidarity and to encourage discussion and social change. FAR received support from organizations like the Federation, the Independent Producers Organisation, the Foundation, and individuals from the film industry.
